We started an ongoing game of Risk with the family to play  every night. My wife and nine year old daughter are dominating right now. I got dealt a real crap initial hand, lost a few key battles and have settled on a horde strategy for now. My seven year-old is basically Kim Jong-un, just making absolutely batshit crazy moves yet somehow still hanging around.

I’ve been gaming with the same bunch of people for about 30 years and we’ve tried just about every board game and RPG known to humanity. Being a bunch of engineers and scientists, an unreasonable amount of effort goes into finding winning strategies that take advantage of the way the game’s rules work: it’s a matter of considerable prestige among us to find a loophole in a game big enough that it results in the creation of a house rule .

As far as I recall, deciding your moves with a random number generator is a surprisingly effective strategy in Risk.

Controlling Australia is the first part of winning Risk.  Park a discouraging number of armies on Siam (shows how old my Risk board is) to prevent Asia from bring claimed and ensure yourself a steady supply of armies for the rest of the game.  Rinse and repeat with South America, later North America and then win the game with a match through Africa and the rest.  You can never win the land war in Asia, but it's the best temptation for lesser opponents to eliminate themselves.

I used to play Risk all the time as a teen, but I haven’t pulled it out in years.  What's with the colored blocks?  My set has the armies represented as plastic roman numerals.

That was my plan, then my little dictator built up armies around me in Asia, preventing my move into Oz. Got the  wife knocking on my door in Kamchatka. I’m one dude up against three women. Not good odds.

The women in my house are very  artistic, so they think in a completely different way. I fear they will defeat me.

That’s usually the safest outcome anyway :-)

We have a set of throwback board game sets. They come in nice tree wooden boxes and use the original wooden pieces. You stand the blocks up to represent cavalry and there are different shaped pieces to represent artillery.
